Affectionately referred to as "Myouken-san." The Buddhist deity Myouken is enshrined in many water sources throughout the Kumamoto region, and is she commonly worshipped as a water goddess.
2Takezaki Spring Source
It looks like a small water source to the side of a bamboo thicket, but around 120 tons of water bubbles up every minute from this water source, which turns into a smoothly flowing stream, passing over water plants until it forms a large flow.
The water from here is used for irrigation canals, providing water to around 350 hectares worth of rice paddies and vegetable fields.
3Shirakawa River Source
Commonly used as a synonym for springs in Minamiaso, this is the riverhead of the Shirakawa River-- one of the top class rivers in Japan.
This spring puts forth 60 tons of water per minute along with sand from the depths of the earth. The pleasant sound of the abundantly flowing water echoes through the woods at all times. When you visit please be sure to enjoy some time shopping, having teatime, or just playing in the water.
4Myojin Pond Meisui Park
Since long ago the water from this pond has been called "Tanjo-sui" (meaning 'birth water') because people commonly believed it would bless people with children. This park also has a pond with carp as well as a shallow pond for children to play in.
5Yoshida Castle Water Area
True to its name, this was the water source for all of the water used in Yoshida Castle which existed here long ago.
The cool water is even more delicious when you learn that it was the castle lord's favorite drink.
6Oike Spring Source
This spring source is larger than other spring sources, and children here often come here to fish and play.
Why not enjoy a waterside picnic in the shade of the trees? A bright yet quiet spring source.
