All the regions of Kyushu are home to cycling roads overflowing with originality, but among them we would like to introduce the "Fukiagehama Cycling Road" which connects Minamisatsuma City to Hioki City in Kagoshima Prefecture.Along the way, we'll be telling you about sightseeing spots along the road, places to grab a bite to eat, hot springs facilities to refresh your tired body, and much more.
The Fukiagehama Cycling Road is a cycling road that cuts across Fukiagehama Beach, a beach which is counted as one of the 3 best sand dunes locations in Japan, alongside the Tottori Sand Dunes and Shizuoka's Nanen Sand Dunes. This is a bicycle road stretching 23.9km in length that utilizes abandoned railway lines and other ruins. It is full of historical sites that visitors can enjoy seeing while cycling, such as the Nansatsu Railroad which began operation in 1914 and ceased operations in 1983. Facilities have been set up for the new users of the former railway line, with distance markers and benches at the former stations, so that visitors can enjoy seeing what has been left behind after the railroad's 69 years of operation. There is a sunset bridge where you can see the ocean setting into the East China Sea, and many other beautiful scenic locations. We recommend you enjoy a leisurely ride through the remnants of the railway stations as if you were following the trains that used to run through this area.
